USS United States Ship HMS His/Her Majesty's Ship, used by both their Britannic and Saudi majesties
USNS United States Naval Ship HMAS His/Her Majesty's Ship, Majesty's Australian Ship
 MV Motor Vessel  HMCS  His/Her Majesty's Ship, Majesty's Canadian Ship
SS  Steam Ship RMS Royal Mail Ship
SV Sailing Vessel HMNZS His/Her Majesty's Ship, New Zealand Ship
ARA  Armada de la Republic Argentina HDMS His/Her Majesty's Ship,  Danish Majesty's Ship

We get requests for term definitions that are not in our database.  Can you help?  Here are a few...
In looking up statistics on the ship (S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam) they refer to her length as "Length b. p. 213.36 m" What does b.p. refer to? Also "DWT 10429 TONS." What does DWT stand for, Dead Weight Tonnage? Appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you. Bill Jones 

ANSWER!!! - b.p. is bow pulpit.  In the past ships were measured from stern forward as in "Length.  b. p. 213.36 m" b.p. has been replaced by L.O.A. (Length Over All) (thanks Brent Matthews)
